Zardosi, The Royal Thread Work of India
Crafted in Gold, Woven in History
Experience the opulence of Zardosi embroidery — a regal legacy of Indian craftsmanship.
Zardosi (The Royal Threadwork of India), derived from Persian ‘Zar’ (gold) and ‘Dozi’ (work), is an ancient embroidery technique once patronized by Indian royalty. Using gold and silver threads, pearls, and precious stones, Zardosi breathes luxury into fabric.
The Zardosi design process begins with a detailed sketch, traditionally drawn on butter paper. This initial sketch serves as a blueprint for the embroidery, guiding the artisan in placing each element with precision. The design is then transferred to the fabric, often using techniques like tracing with a perforated paper stencil and colored powder, or by directly drawing onto the fabric. This crucial step ensures the final Zardosi embroidery accurately reflects the intended design.
The second step in Zardosi involves transferring the design from the butter paper sketch to the fabric.
The design on the butter paper is perforated with tiny holes along the lines. This perforated paper is then placed on the fabric, and a colored powder (often a chalk-based powder) is pounced or rubbed over the holes. This leaves a dotted outline of the design on the fabric.
Once the design is transferred, it acts as a guide for the Zardosi embroidery work.
With the design traced onto the fabric, the actual Zardosi embroidery begins. The artisan uses a needle and thread to attach various metallic elements, such as gold or silver wires (zari), beads, sequins, and gemstones, to the fabric. This is a meticulous process that requires a high degree of skill and precision. The artisan carefully works along the traced pattern, bringing the design to life with intricate stitches and embellishments.
Often, Zardosi work is further enhanced by the addition of gemstones. Small precious or semi-precious stones like crystals, pearls, or colored gems are sewn onto the fabric, often in conjunction with the metallic threads. The stones are carefully selected to complement the design and add to the richness and sparkle of the embroidery. This step requires even greater delicacy to ensure the stones are securely attached without damaging the fabric or the existing Zardosi work.
Once the Zardosi embroidery, possibly with gemstones, is complete, it’s used to make final products like handbags and accessories. This involves assembly of components like the embroidered fabric and hardware (clasps, handles, etc.), followed by a quality check to ensure the Zardosi work and gemstones are secure, and the product meets design standards.
